1.                Introduction

It is the policy of FairTradeNet to conduct its business fairly and ethically. Any activity that could raise questions as to the honesty, integrity, fairness, or reputation of the Association or its members and Web affiliates is prohibited.

This Code of Ethics cannot anticipate every circumstance I might face. In case of doubt, I will stop and ask.

2.                Quality Assurance

I will provide impeccable quality only. I will select and work with another FairNetTrader for each job I undertake, who will be my quality assurance (“QA”) partner for that job. I may also be asked to act as a QA partner for other FairNetTraders. I understand that the concept of FairTradeNet is based on teamwork, solidarity among affiliates, politeness in daily dealings with colleague affiliates, and positive criticism.

·         Choosing a QA Partner

Effective teamwork with my selected QA partner(s) will critically increase my chances of delivering a perfect job. I will choose my QA partner for each project based on the requirements of the project and the need for good teamwork. In the event of previous unsatisfactory performance by a QA partner, I will be entitled not to entrust any future job to him/her. I will be equally free to refuse QA jobs from any other FairNetTrader(s).

·         Accepting a QA job

I will not accept any QA job for which I am not fully qualified or if I am not totally proficient with the tools required for the purpose.

If I accept a QA job, I will fill out the required QA form, if applicable to my service category, and send it to my job partner, unless we have been working together regularly, in which case I will be excused from filling out this form. The completed form will remain confidential and is intended to help the affiliate who has done the job to identify and overcome his/her weaknesses.

As a QA partner, I will rate the work of any FairNetTrader I have worked with on at least three occasions. I will abstain from making negative comments if I feel that his/her overall performance has been satisfactory and that the fee I have earned is commensurate to the time and effort I have applied to the job. This is a common effort designed to help us learn from each other.

·         Maintaining and upgrading professional competence

I will maintain and upgrade my technical knowledge and expertise as a means to achieving excellence, by undertaking independent study, attending seminars, conferences, or courses, participating in professional organizations, and reading as much as possible in both my source and target languages.

3.                Timeliness

I will not accept unrealistic demands for delivery or deadlines. I will not accept jobs exceeding any limits agreed upon to ensure the quality of projects in specific service categories, such as, for example, a ceiling of 2,500 source words per translator per working day for translation services.

I will not miss a deadline. If, for any reason arising after I accept a job, I realize that I will not be able to deliver on time, I will either do everything possible to find help or a replacement, or will contact the project manager/client as soon as I can.

4.                Rates

I will include pricing information in my profile at FairTradeNet's web site. The rates indicated will not be below the minimum agreed upon for my service category, and I will mention that such rates include quality assurance, if applicable to my service category.

I will not publicly offer - or ask for - lower rates on other Web sites. I recognize that FairTradeNet's management team regularly checks compliance with this requirement.

·         Private arrangements

Private rate arrangements between a FairNetTrader (not acting as such) and a third party fall beyond the scope of FairTradeNet and are those parties’ business only. In this context, a private arrangement will be understood as a professional agreement for which no public announcement is made. I will strictly refrain from negotiating or reaching private, lower-rate arrangements in relation to any job posting made on FTN.

5.                Subcontracting

The subcontracting of work obtained through FairTradeNet is strictly prohibited. Any project offered through FairTradeNet that exceeds the capacity of a single FairNetTrader, whether because of its length or deadline, or because it calls for the involvement of more than one category of freelance work (translation, web design, etc.), will be undertaken by two or more freelancers registered with, and admitted by, FairTradeNet. If I am offered such a project by a client, I will ask the client to require project management by FairTradeNet. A project manager will be appointed to coordinate the effort.

6.                Confidential Information

I acknowledge the confidential character of client documents and information, and agree that such documents and information are the sole and exclusive property of the client. Accordingly, I agree not to reproduce any of the client’s documents or information without the client’s prior written consent, not to use them except in the performance of the project, and not to divulge them in any form, in whole or in part, to any third party, either during or after the performance of the project.

Furthermore, I agree not to mention my clients’ names on my profile at FairTradeNet, and not to mention the names of FairTradeNet's clients at FairTradeNet or elsewhere, except with the client's prior consent.

7.                Conflicts of Interest

FairTradeNet has no interest in controlling the personal or professional activities of its affiliates. However, some activities, such as an active role in the management of a commercial service procurement Web site or part- or full-time employment with an agency are in conflict with the Association's goals. I will disclose any actual or apparent conflict of interest, since the mere appearance of a conflict of interest can affect the outside perception of FairTradeNet as much as an actual conflict of interest.

8.                Violations of the Code of Ethics

In the event of violation of this Code of Ethics, I will have to explain my position to FairTradeNet's Executive Committee. If my explanations are satisfactory, I may be allowed to remain registered and the Human Resources Manager will stay in close contact with me over a period of six months to check my adherence to FairTradeNet's principles. I recognize that if I do not consent to adapt my business practices to the Association’s standards, I will be excluded.

I will contact FairTradeNet's Human Resources Manager to discuss any ethics-related issue that may arise .

This Code of Ethics does not create any right, privilege, entitlement, or cause of action in any person or entity (other than the Association), whether governmental, commercial, private, or otherwise, where such right, privilege, entitlement, or cause of action would not otherwise exist.
